Program Description

I'M AN ORIGINAL CATCHPHRASE

Our Barcelona Summer Academic Program removes barriers that prevent athletes from studying abroad. We use sports as a vehicle to increase cultural immersion and language acquisition. Students live in Barcelona and attend class daily at Veritas University. Barcelona is Spain's cosmopolitan capital and is home to the rich Catalan culture, remarkable architecture, stunning beaches, and some of Spain's most successful professional sports clubs and athletes. Students will have the opportunity to visit some of Spain's most impressive landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Arch of Triumph, and Montjuic––a 560-foot mountain with incredible views of the city and memories of the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Barcelona is a tourist-friendly city. You will hear everything from English to Catalan to other European languages as you walk the streets. Students with a background in Spanish will thrive on the opportunity to practice the language with locals. You will have ample opportunities to train while abroad, with a gym membership and time to play pick-up games with local teams. Our team will arrange one weekend excursion for the entire group and you get to plan your own trips to other popular destinations such as Montserrat, Madrid, Zaragoza, and Mallorca.

Housing & Meals

Athletics Abroad

Students reside in a centrally-located university residence with their fellow Student-Athletes Abroad peers and other international students. Rooms are furnished with two twin beds, desk, dresser, linens, bath towels, closet, nightstand, mini kitchen, and private bathroom. Laundry is available on site.

For meals, students can cook in their apartment or explore Barcelona's vibrant scene of international cuisine and typical cafés. Some meals will be provided throughout the week to provide students a cultural experience eating out.

You will be provided access to a centrally located gym in Barcelona, so you can maintain your training with 4-5 workouts per week. There will also be opportunities to play your sport abroad and train with other international and U.S. athletes.

Excursions

This program has one pre-planned weekend excursion to Valencia, where students will partake in a traditional paella workshop, sail along the mediterranean sea, and dance the Flamenco. All meals and transportation provided. Any other weekends are free for independent travel at the expense of the student.

Course Information

Students will enroll in a 4-week Sports Marketing Course at Veritas University, providing the ease of transferring credits to their home institution. This dynamic course in Sports Marketing offers students an immersive journey into the world of sports business through a strategic marketing lens.

It is grounded in the belief that the most effective marketing practices applied in traditional industries can be adeptly utilized in the realm of sports organizations that provide sports as their core offering or leverage sports as a powerful communication vehicle. The course also recognizes the distinctive nature of sports––a realm of unparalleled creativity and unique behaviors that differentiate it from conventional brands, businesses, and organizations.

This is a theoretical-practical course and explores the following question: How can the proven marketing and strategic management principles be expertly adapted and employed in the sports industry, while acknowledging its exceptional and innovative attributes to effectively promote sports-related entities, engage audiences, and drive success?

Students will engage with the lectures by analyzing relevant case studies and producing a final project which involves creating a comprehensive sports marketing campaign proposal for a sports team.
