Program Description

Spend four weeks living in Valencia, Spain, situated on the southeastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Less than a four hour drive from both Madrid and Barcelona, Spain’s third-largest city provides both ultra-modern architecture like the City of Arts and Sciences with the historic charm of Old Town. The city is known for its museums, shops, and long stretches of beaches. It is also the birthplace of paella, the popular Spanish rice dish.

Our interns in Valencia are fully immersed in their work environment, completing both self directed projects and assisting with day-to-day operations at their respective companies. Our SAA staff works to advise you on the options available, and match you with an appropriate internship based on your academic and professional interests. You will have ample opportunities to train while abroad, with a gym membership and time to play pick-up games with local teams. We arrange one weekend excursion for the entire group to explore one of Spain’s most historic cities, and you can plan your own trips to other popular destinations such as Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona, and Mallorca.

Housing

All homestays include a private bedroom with a bed, linens, closet, nightstand, private or shared bathroom and laundry once per week. Students will complete a homestay questionnaire after enrolling in the program so our local staff can learn more about their preferences.

Students also have the option to live in a centrally located apartment building with other SAA students and other visiting international students. Apartments come furnished with a twin or queen sized bed, desk, dresser, linens, closet, nightstand, and a shared bathroom and shared kitchen.

Athletics Abroad

You will be provided access to a centrally located gym in Valencia, so can maintain your training with 4-5x workouts per week. There will also be opportunities to play your sport abroad, and train with other U.S. athletes.

Excursions

This program has one pre-planned weekend excursion to the cities of Madrid and historic Toledo. All other weekends are free for independent travel.

Student Testimonials

The highlight of this program was meeting new people and learning about different cultures and customs. I think it was amazing to be able to experience that type of learning independence while in another country yet you had this group of peers to lean on and learn from. It's an amazing opportunity to travel with athletes from all over and to experience new places and things while learning about your career and yourself.

Timber Stoops, SAA Intern 2018

I feel as though what separates SAA from other abroad programs is its ability to offer student-athletes like myself valuable learning opportunities that extend far beyond what any ordinary internship site could ever provide. This program is unique because it gives students the chance to become a part of something much bigger than themselves; it gives them a platform to expand their knowledge and to share their experiences with other people who truly value the importance of service learning and who wholeheartedly support cultural competence as a vital tool and lifelong skill.
